Description
2017 release. Nadine Khouri is a British-Lebanese musician and songwriter currently based in London. Influenced by dream-pop, moody soundtracks and spoken-word, her sound has been described as a "music born of perennial outsider-status." Noted by John Parish (PJ Harvey, Giant Sand) for her voice, Khouri was invited to sing on a track on his Screenplay LP and subsequently to record her forthcoming album with the producer in his hometown of Bristol. The resulting album is a haunting collection of poetic and atmospheric meditations on loss and transformation. The album also features guest contributions from Parish, Irish singer-songwriter Adrian Crowley, violinist Emma Smith (James Yorkston, Hot Chip) and others. In the past year, Khouri has performed in some of London's most renowned venues and supported Howe Gelb, Mary Hampton, and John Parish, garnering positive reviews for her live performances.

Saw this artist last year at a festival in Winchester. She peaked my interest more than any of the artists taking part so much so that I bought the e.p available on the day ( a song to the city). That was a taster for this album which I have been looking out for since then. It expands on the good impression created then. She has a smooth, deepish, versatile, velvety voice which has shades of so many other artists (among others maybe Hope Sandoval or Beth Gibbons off the top of my head) . The accompanying music performed using a myriad of instruments frames her voice perfectly. It is a moody atmospheric offering with a few livelier numbers at the tail end of the disc - shake it like a shaman, which I am not particularly keen on, and Catapult. I feel the standard holds up well from start to finish and particularly like the slower Broken Star and title track which drip atmosphere, where her almost spoken vocal hits the spot completely. Having heard tracks prior to release and now giving the album several good airings I would not hesitate to recommend this cd.
