While a sophomore slump weaves its way into a few moments of the hour-long follow-up record, the band's surging innovation (including horns, keyboards and strings) and uplifting melodies assures the listener that the music is all that matters. Whether he's crooning delicately over a gentle acoustic accompaniment ("Louisville," "Keep a Little Organ"), playing the part of piano balladeer ("Shiny Bruise," "Graceless") or belting it out over a driving backbeat ("Accidental Man," "Sell the Lie"), vocalist and chief songwriter Alex Dezen has established a complementary groove between country, rock and pop. Only the 10-minute final track "God Bless America" falls flat--complete with 1970s super-group excess-but by then it's too late to spoil the inspirational hooks and hummable choruses of this band still on the rise. --Scott Holter
