Description
Fresh from their work with acts such as Lady Maisery, The Elizabethan Session and The Dufay Collective, The Askew Sisters return with their enchanting new album, 'In the Air or the Earth', expertly produced by Andy Bell (producer of BBC Folk Award Best Album 2014 'The Full English'). This is a dark album that explores themes of boundary crossing, tackling profound and enduring questions about life, death and the in-between. Their adaptation of 'The Wife of Usher's Well' is striking: Emily's driving fiddle creates a stark setting for Hazel's captivating voice, which won her Best Female Singer in the Spiral Awards 2011. Concertina adds a new dimension to the sisters' sound in 'The Unquiet Grave': you can almost hear the rain dropping as the instruments intertwine around Hazel's delicate vocals. They play fiddle and melodeon with the unity of two people who have played together all their lives and woven throughout are influences of Emily's work on the early music scene, creating a unique new sound on tunes such as Hare's Maggot and Crimson Velvet. This is a captivating album of cinematic arrangements and it cements Emily and Hazel's position as two of the finest musicians on the English folk scene.

Very good to see traditional music getting taken up by the younger performers, both in actual content and in style. The disc is almost all traditional, but there is a degree of scholarship and research which makes for a fresh-sounding recording which is far more than simply reproducing the performances of others.Add thoroughly modern standards of performance, as here, plus the 'magic' that seems almost endemic when siblings cooperate musically, and you end up with something rather special.
